Census Bureau, as of 2019, 34% of the county's population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, 23% as Black or African American, and 20% as White. The remaining percentage includes Asian, Native American, and other ethnicities. With such a diverse population, it is important for the county's political leaders to reflect this diversity.
However, this has not always been the case.
The History of Political Leadership in Orange County
Orange County has a long history of being predominantly led by White politicians. In fact, it wasn't until 1986 that Mable Butler became the first Black woman elected to the Orange County Commission. This was a significant milestone for the county, but it was not until 2010 that Teresa Jacobs became the first female mayor. Since then, there has been a slow but steady increase in diversity among political leaders in Orange County. In 2018, Jerry Demings became the first Black mayor of Orange County and Victoria Siplin became the first Black woman elected to the Orange County School Board. Currently, there are five members on the Orange County Commission, with two being women and three being men.Of these five members, two identify as Black or African American, one as Hispanic or Latino, and two as White. This is a significant improvement from the past, but there is still room for more diversity.
